BREAKING: Only four community halls in the Bega Valley will receive urgent upgrades in 2025, as part of a $150,000 investment aimed at preserving heritage and enhancing facilities. Is your local hall one of them?
This critical upgrade program, just announced by the Bega Valley Shire Council, will directly impact the functionality and heritage value of community spaces that are vital to local residents. The selected halls—Murrah Hall, Rocky Hall, Brogo Hall, and Quaama—will benefit from essential repairs and improvements, ensuring they remain vibrant centers for social and cultural activities.
Gabrielle Ward, the council’s halls and cemeteries officer, emphasized the importance of the hall committees in this decision. “They’re the eyes and ears on the ground—identifying issues early, helping us prioritize works, and often volunteering their own time to support events and upkeep,” she stated.
Specific upgrades include deck repairs at Murrah Hall, the construction of a new deck at Rocky Hall, additional lighting at Brogo Hall, and gutter replacements at Quaama. These enhancements are essential not just for preservation, but for fostering connections within the community.
“Our community halls are hubs where people come together for markets, concerts, and weddings,” Ms. Ward added. “They play an essential role in fostering connection and belonging.” The upgrades are crucial in maintaining these community lifelines, which reflect the rich history and character of the Bega Valley.
In addition to the hall upgrades, the Bega Valley Shire Council is currently seeking community feedback on 14 council policies, as mandated by the Local Government Act 1993. CEO Anthony McMahon stated that this review offers an opportunity for clearer communication between the council and residents. Submissions will be accepted until October 2, 2023.
This is a pivotal moment for residents to voice their opinions on how council policies affect their daily interactions and decision-making processes.
As repairs and improvements unfold, the council is also set to commence work on a retaining wall at the Bermagui Waste and Recycling Centre starting Tuesday, August 26, weather permitting. Expect traffic changes within the facility as the work progresses over the coming weeks.
Moreover, road surface stabilisation works are scheduled from August 25 to October 3, with crews working diligently between the Bermagui River Bridge and Posidonia Esplanade. These improvements aim to enhance roadway safety and longevity, though drivers should anticipate delays and obey reduced speed limits during this period.
With these crucial upgrades and community engagement initiatives, the Bega Valley is poised to strengthen its community ties while preserving its cherished heritage. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and involved as these developments progress.
