URGENT UPDATE: The Bendigo Strikers have kept their championship dreams alive with a thrilling 59-58 victory over the Casey Demons in the Victorian Netball League elimination final. This nail-biting win propels the Strikers into the semi-finals, where they will face Boroondara next Wednesday night at the State Netball Centre.
The Strikers, competing in just their second season, defied their lower seed to secure a spot in the final four. They entered the last quarter with a four-goal lead, 47-43, but the Demons mounted a fierce comeback, even taking the lead at 51-48 before the Strikers rallied to reclaim control.
Star shooter Gabe Richards played a pivotal role, scoring 49 goals at an impressive 92.4% accuracy. With the clock winding down, the Strikers managed to maintain their composure, holding off a late push from the Demons to clinch the victory.
Coach Tracey Brereton expressed her pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of staying calm under pressure. “The girls didn’t panic and they stuck to what they had to do,” she stated, highlighting their ability to manage the game effectively as they navigated their first finals experience.
The upcoming semi-final against Boroondara promises to be a challenge, as they finished second in the league and lost their opening final to the City West Falcons by a staggering 72-48. However, Brereton remains optimistic, noting, “I think we actually match-up quite well with Boroondara next week.”
In another exciting elimination final, the Hawks edged out the North East Blaze in a close 55-54 finish. While the Strikers’ championship team advances, Bendigo’s 23-under side faced defeat against the Geelong Cougars, falling 70-52.
The Strikers are one of only four clubs in the VNL to have both their championship and 23-under teams make the finals, showcasing the depth of talent in the region. Amid the challenges, Brereton remains proud of her team’s journey, stating, “The girls should be really proud of what they achieved this year.”
As anticipation builds for the semi-final clash next week, fans are eager to see if the Strikers can continue their dream run in the VNL finals. Don’t miss the action as Bendigo prepares to take on Boroondara on July 26, 2023!
