UPDATE: North Melbourne’s bustling intersection at Queensberry and Errol streets transformed into a lively racetrack as the fourth annual Queensberry Cup brought billycart racing to life on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Dozens of homemade and ingeniously designed billycarts raced through a hay bale-lined course, captivating a cheering crowd.
This year’s event showcased an exciting variety of vehicles, from whimsical designs like a reptilian low rider to the standout aerodynamic “Flying Potato”. Event organizer and director of The Centre, Ariel Valent, described the billycart as “a bit of an equaliser,” emphasizing its accessibility: “You can just put a few bits of wood together and get wheels off a pram, or you can really go all out and create a complex design.”
In a surprising turn, the long-standing champion Furlong family, known for their architectural creations and multiple victories, stepped back from the competition, paving the way for new talent. The coveted silverware was claimed by Mac Rowley, a racer from Melbourne University’s Janet Clarke college, who piloted a chariot-inspired cart. Despite challenges, including a cart malfunction before the finals, Rowley’s perseverance paid off.
The atmosphere was electric as families gathered to witness the races. Eoin Deneen, a newcomer to Melbourne, shared his family’s joy in participating: “It’s particularly nice for us because we feel like we’re part of the place.”
As the races concluded by 5:30 PM, the excitement didn’t stop. Children rushed onto the track, gleefully jumping on hay bale barriers, turning the event into a community celebration. The Queensberry Cup not only showcased creativity and competition but fostered a sense of belonging among local families.
With such vibrant community spirit and thrilling races, the Queensberry Cup continues to be a cherished event, promising even more excitement for next year. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming community events and celebrations in North Melbourne!
