URGENT UPDATE: The Boorloo Bridge remains closed following a dangerous incident where a 70-meter section of light casing fell from the structure, narrowly missing a cyclist. Just after 5 PM on October 23, 2023, the light strip plummeted onto a pedestrian walkway and into the Swan River, prompting immediate inspections and emergency repairs.
Authorities confirm that inspections and reinforcements are ongoing as of Tuesday, with Transport Minister Rita Saffioti announcing that the bridge will remain closed for at least two days. Cyclists and joggers are being redirected to the nearby Causeway Bridge while workers assess the situation.
“About 70 meters of casing broke off the structure,” Minister Saffioti stated. “The contractors have been working overnight to inspect and re-fasten the casing.” Fortunately, no injuries occurred, although the incident almost struck a female cyclist using the path at that moment.
Premier Roger Cook reassured the public, emphasizing the bridge’s status as “world-class” despite the “teething” issues associated with new infrastructure. “Whenever you have new infrastructure, there are often early teething issues,” he said. “Main Roads has shut the bridge as a precaution to inspect other components and ensure safety.”
Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas expressed concern for public safety, stating, “It’s essential for the people of Western Australia to understand what happened and whether they can safely use this bridge in the future.” He characterized the incident as a close call, expressing gratitude that no one was harmed.
The Boorloo Bridge, opened less than a year ago, was awarded the “Western Australia Project of the Year” at the 2025 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards. Minister Saffioti defended the bridge’s construction, citing its recognition in an international competition. “These things happen, and we’re proud of the bridge,” she asserted.
As inspections continue, the focus remains on ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge. The local team is actively engaged in repairs, highlighting the benefit of having a domestic workforce addressing the issues.
