URGENT UPDATE: Weight-loss injections for pets are on the verge of becoming a reality. Veterinary versions of popular anti-obesity medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are currently in development, offering a promising solution for overweight cats and dogs.
New clinical trials have shown that the drug exenatide, which functions similarly to the human obesity treatment semaglutide, can effectively reduce calorie intake and body weight in felines. In a groundbreaking trial conducted last year, five cats were fitted with an experimental implant known as OKV-119, which released exenatide into their bloodstream over a period of 84 days. Remarkably, four out of five cats experienced a body mass reduction of at least 5%.
The promising results of these trials have prompted an expansion to include dogs, thanks to a partnership between drug companies Okava and Vivani. If successful, this innovative treatment could be available to pet owners as early as 2028.
