UPDATE: A bridge has been renamed in honor of fallen Senior Constable Tim Lewczuk during an emotional ceremony attended by his parents, Richard and Dot Lewczuk, marking a poignant tribute to a life lost in the line of duty. The ceremony took place at the base of the bridge, where the couple expressed their overwhelming emotions about the honor bestowed upon their son.
“It’s always tough losing somebody, but we were very proud,” Richard said, as the family reflected on their loss. Tim Lewczuk, who joined the police force in 1989, tragically lost his life on a Saturday night in 1997 when a vehicle collided with his police car while he was performing a routine traffic stop. The impact threw him onto the highway below, resulting in his untimely death.
This heartfelt remembrance comes amid recent tragedies in law enforcement, particularly the shooting deaths of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart in Porepunkah last month. Dot Lewczuk stated, “For anyone that’s lost somebody while they were on duty, it brings it all back.” She emphasized the significance of National Police Remembrance Day, stating, “It just means that he’s never forgotten.”
The memorial service for National Police Remembrance Day will be held at Club Italia, located at 128-152 Furlong Road, Sunshine, on September 25, 2023 at 11 AM. Observances will continue statewide on September 29, with various services to honor fallen officers across the region.
This dedication not only serves as a tribute to Tim Lewczuk’s legacy but also highlights the ongoing sacrifices made by police officers nationwide. The Lewczuk family encourages those wishing to support the families affected by the Porepunkah tragedy to donate to the Victoria Police Legacy remembrance fund at [Victoria Police Legacy](https://www.policelegacyvic.org.au/).
As communities reflect on these losses, the importance of remembrance and support for those who serve remains critical. The legacy of fallen officers like Tim Lewczuk continues to resonate profoundly, ensuring they are never forgotten.
