UPDATE: Brimbank Council is urgently requesting detailed assurances from the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) regarding the protection of local heritage sites in the upcoming Sunshine superhub initiative. This request comes as part of the council’s response to LXRP’s call for feedback on the draft declared area boundary for the project’s first stage, highlighting the potential risks to several heritage sites.
Council officials expressed concern that critical heritage locations, including the Sunshine Station signal box, the black arch railway bridge, and the Vic Railways DC substation, could be endangered by construction activities associated with the superhub. In their report, the council emphasized, “Every effort should be made in the design and delivery phase of the project to protect and preserve local heritage places.”
John Pardy, president of the Sunshine Historical Society, underscored the significance of the Sunshine Station signal box, stating, “It’s one of the oldest in the state. To protect that signal box, it requires a design that makes it accessible because of its heritage value.” Pardy stressed that enhancing Sunshine as a destination is crucial, and preserving its historical buildings is vital to achieving that goal.
In response to the council’s concerns, an LXRP spokesperson assured the community that they are actively working through designs for the superhub upgrades. The spokesperson stated, “We will take every step needed to minimize impact and protect nearby heritage sites which we know are significant for the local community.” They further explained that extensive design, environmental, and heritage assessments are standard practice for all LXRP projects, aimed at ensuring minimal environmental impact while protecting heritage places.
While LXRP indicated that the project is expected to have a minimal impact on heritage sites, including the signal box, they also acknowledged that unavoidable impacts may require further assessment and approval. This includes the preparation of necessary heritage impact assessments and plans.
The Brimbank Council’s demand for a summary on how the superhub project will enhance and protect these local heritage sites is critical as the project progresses. Residents and heritage advocates are closely monitoring the situation, urging officials to prioritize heritage preservation in the design plans.
As the council awaits the LXRP’s response, the community remains vigilant, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Sunshine’s historical identity amid significant development. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
