UPDATE: Brisbane City Council has just announced a groundbreaking initiative to upgrade and operate the iconic Riverstage, the city’s largest music and events venue. The council will engage the private sector to implement a series of transformative changes to enhance this beloved location behind the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
The revamp will feature new and upgraded facilities, including a cutting-edge sound management system designed to elevate the concert experience. With a significant investment from a private operator, Riverstage will remain publicly owned, ensuring it continues to serve the community while benefiting from private sector efficiencies.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “We want to make it even better.” He further clarified that while the council aims to enhance the venue, investing in music facilities is not within its core responsibilities. The council is also pursuing a similar public-private funding model for the Chermside Pool.
An expression of interest campaign for potential venue operators is set to kick off on September 22, marking a significant step toward the venue’s revitalization. Riverstage, which first opened its doors in 1989, has hosted some of the world’s biggest bands and attracted nearly 250,000 attendees across 38 events in the last financial year.
Councillor Adam Allan expressed support for the new funding model during a recent council meeting, stating that it would allow for necessary upgrades while freeing up council funds for vital infrastructure improvements, such as better roads and public transport. This approach aims to deliver a safer and more efficient commuting experience for Brisbane residents.
As this initiative unfolds, the focus remains on enhancing the community’s cultural landscape while ensuring fiscal responsibility. The Riverstage upgrade is expected to have a profound impact, not only on the venue itself but also on the local economy and arts scene.
Stay tuned for updates as Brisbane City Council moves forward with this ambitious project, promising a brighter future for Riverstage and its many fans.
