brisbane-gpo-hits-market-99-year-lease-opportunity-announced

BREAKING: Brisbane’s iconic General Post Office (GPO) is officially on the market for the first time since its establishment in 1872. Australia Post has just announced it will seek expressions of interest for a 99-year lease on this heritage-listed landmark located on Queen Street.

This urgent move marks a significant shift for the historic site, with ownership remaining under Australia Post while allowing for a revolutionary opportunity to revitalize the property. Michael Bradburn, Australia Post’s Chief Financial Officer, emphasized that while the post office will remain at the site, its exact location is open for negotiation as part of the leaseback arrangements.

“The Brisbane GPO is a landmark building, however, the post office only occupies a very small part of the full site,” Bradburn stated. He highlighted that this long-term leasehold presents a unique chance to enhance the area, particularly in light of the upcoming 2032 Olympic Games.

With a total area of 5306 square meters and approximately 8000 square meters of lettable space, most of which is currently vacant, the potential for development is enormous. Bradburn added, “By offering a leasehold, we have an opportunity to reinvest in our network and provide our eCommerce customers with fast and reliable deliveries to support their business growth.”

The GPO, known for its historical significance, is set to open as part of Brisbane Open House, inviting the community to engage with this architectural treasure. The announcement has sparked excitement among local businesses and residents, who see this as a catalyst for growth and revitalization in the heart of Brisbane.

As Australia Post prepares to move forward, the community and potential investors are urged to act quickly, as expressions of interest for the 99-year lease are expected to generate significant attention. This is a pivotal moment for Brisbane, and stakeholders are watching closely for what developments may unfold in the coming weeks.
