canberra-mum-robyn-smith-completes-city-to-surf-raises-20k-for-cancer

UPDATE: Robyn Smith, a determined mum from Canberra, has successfully completed the City to Surf run, raising an impressive $20,000 for Inherited Cancers Australia. The event took place on August 13, 2023, amid pouring rain, with over 90,000 participants.

Robyn, 46, ran the challenging 14-kilometer course bare-chested, showcasing her double mastectomy scars—a courageous move aimed at increasing awareness about inherited cancers. Diagnosed with the BRCA2 gene mutation in 2019, she faces a 70% risk of developing breast cancer.

The public’s response has been overwhelmingly positive. Robyn expressed her gratitude, stating, “The reaction to my run has been overwhelming and amazingly positive.” She shared that many spectators high-fived her, and a stranger even created a supportive banner that read “Go Robyn” adorned with images of scars.

Robyn’s participation in the race has significantly boosted visibility for Inherited Cancers Australia. “The engagement we had over our digital channels and website has been insane,” she noted. As of now, the fundraising continues, with hopes for government or corporate sponsorship to secure further support for the organization.

Throughout the run, Robyn encountered supporters, including a teacher from Canberra who discussed her story with students, and even a participant in a gorilla costume representing cancer research. This human connection underscored the race’s spirit and the cause’s importance.

Despite the nerves leading up to the event, Robyn’s mission has only just begun. She aims to keep raising awareness and funds to support those affected by inherited cancers. Donations can still be made through her fundraising page for Inherited Cancers Australia.

As Robyn reflects on this pivotal moment, she emphasizes the need for continued dialogue about inherited cancer risks and the importance of community support. Her brave actions not only inspired others but also highlighted the critical work of organizations that provide vital information and assistance to those navigating inherited cancer challenges.

Stay tuned for more updates as Robyn’s story continues to resonate, and her fundraising efforts gain momentum.
