UPDATE: Capital Chemist in Bathurst has just been named the NSW Community Pharmacy of the Year for 2026, redefining pharmacy services and elevating health outcomes for thousands. This significant recognition comes as the pharmacy has implemented innovative approaches that are now being replicated nationwide.
With a dedicated team of nearly 50 employees serving an impressive 15,000 customers each month, co-owner Marcus Heiner expressed his surprise at receiving the award. “We didn’t know,” Heiner stated. “But I was confident that what we’re doing is really unique.” He emphasized that while many customers may only see the pharmacy as a place for prescriptions, the services offered go far beyond that.
Capital Chemist has pioneered a Homecare and NDIS support model that connects clients with essential healthcare services. This forward-thinking strategy is designed to assist individuals, particularly those who are frail and vulnerable, in maintaining their independence. “I’m convinced it massively improves patient health outcomes,” Heiner added.
The decision to pursue the award this year was driven by the expansion of the partnership team, allowing more visibility and presence at important industry events. Heiner has been actively participating in award-related activities across Sydney and Canberra, indicating the pharmacy’s commitment to being a leader in healthcare innovation.
Winning the NSW title positions Capital Chemist to compete for the national award in 2026. The pharmacy is focused on a holistic approach to healthcare, moving away from being merely a medication provider to becoming a central hub for health services. “We can now connect them to any part of the health system that would improve their health,” Heiner stated.
The pharmacy offers a wide range of services, including vaccinations, asthma checks, and various health screenings. Heiner insists that the pharmacy should be enabled to assist patients wherever possible. “If there is an area the pharmacy can help in, we should be involved,” he remarked.
In addition to expanding services, Capital Chemist is engaged in ongoing discussions about new healthcare initiatives to address gaps in the current system. Heiner believes in focusing on areas that are underperforming in healthcare delivery. “If something is working well, we don’t need to be involved, but if there are areas that aren’t functioning, we want to help,” he said.
Heiner attributes the award to his dedicated team, which has more than doubled since he and his wife took over the business in 2010. “Without the team, there is no way any of the new services or any of the innovation could have occurred,” he emphasized, highlighting the collaborative spirit that drives their success.
This award not only recognizes Capital Chemist’s exceptional service but also sets a benchmark for pharmacies across the nation. The developments at Capital Chemist are a testament to how community pharmacies can significantly enhance public health outcomes.
