BREAKING: Prosecutors have just upgraded charges against Kyle James Menzies, 22, in a serious armed robbery case in Tamworth. During a brief appearance in Tamworth Local Court today, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed Menzies faces a new charge of robbery in company causing wounding or grievous bodily harm, replacing a previous charge of robbery armed with an offensive weapon.
If convicted, Menzies could face up to 25 years in prison. The charges stem from an alleged incident on August 20, 2022, where Menzies and another suspect are accused of attacking a 39-year-old victim on the street around 3:20 AM. Police allege the victim was assaulted with a knife and stomped on, resulting in significant injuries that required hospitalization.
Menzies, who has been on bail since his arrest, is also charged with intimidation and custody of a knife in a public place. During today’s proceedings, Magistrate John McIntosh granted a continuation of Menzies’ bail conditions while also permitting the DPP to apply for bail on the new charge.
In a statement, a DPP solicitor mentioned, “The severity of the new charge reflects the gravity of the victim’s injuries.” Menzies’ legal representation, led by solicitor Matthew Spicer, did not object to the bail conditions, allowing the case to progress to a case conference set for March.
The victim, who was reportedly walking along Robert Street at the time, was rushed to Tamworth Hospital for treatment. Authorities have described his injuries as “significant,” although he has since been released.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about public safety in the area, as community members react to the alarming nature of the crime. Police tracked Menzies to a residence on Quinn Street where he was arrested later that day.
As this case develops, attention remains on the forthcoming court dates and the implications for the accused and the victim. Stay tuned for updates as this urgent situation unfolds.
