UPDATE: A teenager has been hospitalized following a disturbing incident involving excessive force at the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre in the Australian Capital Territory. Reports from the family allege that staff violently subdued the child, resulting in severe injuries.

The incident occurred on November 16, 2025, when the child, whose identity is protected due to legal reasons, was forcibly restrained by multiple male staff members. The child’s mother claims the teenager sustained significant bruising, a swollen jaw, and blurred vision after being slammed to the ground, leading to a nosebleed.

The family has since lodged a formal complaint with the ACT Human Rights Commission, expressing outrage over the treatment. “Prison staff have no right to put their hands on my child like that,” the mother stated. “I’m disgusted that this happened to my child while in Bimberi.”

According to the mother, the child was kept in their room beyond the normal breakfast time and became agitated when told they would be removed for a “reset” in another room. The situation escalated when the teenager threw dry cereal at staff members. In response, around five male staff members restrained the child, causing multiple impacts to the face and resulting in visible injuries.

A CT scan conducted on November 17 confirmed the child’s injuries, including bruising and bleeding under the skin. The report noted, “No strangulation but held from back of neck,” highlighting the severity of the situation.

In an email sent to the child’s mother, an acting manager from ACT Youth Justice and Adolescent Services acknowledged the incident and stated they were seeking further details regarding the use of force. The child has since been released on bail.

The ACT Government responded to the incident but refrained from commenting specifically due to privacy concerns. A spokesperson stated, “Bimberi has a comprehensive review process for incidents, including the review of every use of force.” They emphasized that such measures are a last resort to ensure safety and manage situations.

This alarming case raises critical concerns about the treatment of young individuals in detention facilities. The family is advocating for accountability and a thorough investigation into the use of force at the facility.

As this story develops, more details are expected to emerge. The community is urged to stay informed about the implications of this incident on youth detention practices in Australia.
