UPDATE: Clyde North residents are urgently calling for immediate action at the dangerous intersection of Pattersons Road and Tuckers Road, where a series of crashes has raised serious safety concerns. Local authorities are facing criticism for their slow response to a situation that residents describe as life-threatening.
For years, the intersection has been plagued by accidents attributed to a confusing traffic light system that leaves right-turning drivers vulnerable. Local resident Laura Harris, who has lived near the intersection for five years, described the situation as “criminal negligence.” “Last night, there was one at 10:30 PM, and then again this morning at around 8:30 AM. So, two in less than 24 hours,” she stated on August 27, 2023.
Harris reported at least six accidents from August 19 to August 31, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. “They haven’t even put up a sign to say that turning right must give way,” she added, emphasizing that despite acknowledging the issue, the City of Casey has not taken adequate steps to ensure safety.
In a statement, Keri New, Manager of City and Asset Planning, confirmed awareness of the frequent accidents, particularly involving right-turning vehicles failing to yield to oncoming traffic. “Due to the high number of car accidents, Council applied for Federal Black Spot funding last year to implement fully controlled right-turn phases,” New stated. However, the funding application was unsuccessful, leading to further frustration among residents.
As an interim measure, the council has improved line marking at the intersection but acknowledges that significant changes, including signal modifications, could take six to twelve months. New also mentioned ongoing discussions with Victoria Police to explore additional warning signage for drivers approaching the intersection.
Local resident Alex, who lives nearby, expressed concerns that traffic will worsen with the opening of a new shopping center in the area, including an Aldi. “It’s going to be worse because we’re having a new shopping centre coming there,” he warned, reflecting the growing anxiety among residents.
The dangers peak during rush hour, according to another resident who walks near the intersection daily. “I’m so worried that I’m going to get knocked over or that all the kids in the area who walk to primary school are going to get hit by flying debris from a car accident,” she said.
Residents are urging the council to prioritize safety over aesthetics, pointing out that funds were recently allocated for $25,000 worth of Christmas decorations, while traffic safety measures remain underfunded. “It is absolutely appalling that they know what the problem is. But no one wants to agree to pay for it,” Laura added.
With traffic accidents occurring at alarming rates, Clyde North residents are demanding that the City of Casey take immediate and effective action to rectify the dangerous conditions at the Pattersons and Tuckers Road intersection. The community awaits swift responses to their urgent pleas for safety and accountability.
