URGENT UPDATE: Major construction has officially kicked off on the Clyde Road Upgrade, marking a significant leap forward with the lifting of massive bridge beams. Crews are now expanding the overpass from 6 lanes to 10 lanes, a critical step to alleviate traffic bottlenecks for thousands of motorists in Melbourne’s south-east.

Just recently, the first of the 48-tonne, 74-metre-long beams was lifted into place, signaling the largest construction phase of this ambitious project. “These massive bridge beams are an incredibly complex engineering feat, bringing us one step closer to a safer and more reliable journey for our community along Clyde Road,” stated Federal MP Julian Hill.

Construction is set to continue in the coming months, with the aim of upgrading and widening the Princes Freeway overpass in Berwick. Authorities have meticulously planned the work to minimize disruptions for drivers, ensuring traffic can keep moving as smoothly as possible. The project remains on track for completion in 2027.

Throughout February and March, crews will be busy installing additional beams and concrete panels, each weighing up to 3 tonnes. Nightly closures of the Princes Freeway will take place from 8 PM to 5 AM on weekdays until March 27. While drivers can still use freeway ramps during these closures, they should expect delays and are advised to seek alternative routes via the Princes Highway and O’Shea Road.

The newly expanded overpass will feature added turning lanes onto the freeway ramps and dedicated bus lanes, enhancing public transport efficiency. “By easing bottlenecks and expanding this bridge to ten lanes, we’re delivering safer, smoother trips for local families and making daily travel more reliable and less stressful,” said State Member Michael Galea.

In a push for sustainability, the bridge’s 5.6 metre center median wall will use low-carbon steel, achieving up to 39% lower-embodied carbon. Local manufacturing in Corio supports job growth amid Victoria’s Big Build, with project contractors VIDA Roads and Seymour Whyte committed to sustainability initiatives.

As work continues, improvements are also being made to the intersection of Berwick-Cranbourne and Thompson Roads in Clyde North, as well as upgrades to Racecourse Road in Pakenham.
