UPDATE: The community of Uralla is mourning the loss of Lone Petrov, a cherished councilor and dedicated community servant, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 74 after a short illness. Her funeral was held on February 16, 2023, where heartfelt tributes poured in, celebrating her as a “beautiful soul” and “rock of the family.”
In an emotional eulogy, her son Ryan Petrov described Lone as the planner, peacemaker, and wise sage of their family. “Mum was the rock of our family… she gave us everything,” he said. Residents remember her as a “precious treasure” who made a significant impact on the lives of many in Uralla and beyond.
Lone, known affectionately as “Lone,” was born in Sydney and moved to the New England region in 1974 with her husband Michael Petrov and daughter Jodie. She later welcomed two sons, Ryan and Chris. Her commitment to community service began early, starting with her role at Uralla Central School as the canteen lady, a position that provided her sons with a unique status among their peers.
Throughout her life, Lone engaged deeply with local organizations, teaching scripture, running after-school clubs, and coordinating events at St John’s Anglican Church. Her passion for helping others was evident in her extensive volunteer work, including her involvement with Friends of McMaugh Gardens and the Helping Children and Families Association.
In 2021, she was elected to the Uralla Shire Council, following in the footsteps of her father, Vic Wright, who served as Shire president in the 1980s. Ryan expressed pride in her achievements, noting that “she always wanted to give back to the community.”
Lone’s love for her family was profound. She doted on her seven grandchildren—Grace, Chloe, Oliver, Maddy, Teah, Tobias, and Eli—and took immense pride in their accomplishments. “She would beam with pride at their achievements and attend their events whenever she could,” Ryan shared.
As a marriage celebrant, Lone officiated numerous weddings, including that of Ryan and his wife, Natalie, adding a personal touch to their special day.
Community members are reflecting on Lone’s incredible contributions. Fellow councilor Leanne Doran described her as “a precious treasure,” while Robyn Newberry highlighted her tireless efforts for the betterment of society. “An absolute pleasure to work with,” she remarked.
The loss of Lone Petrov has left a significant void in Uralla, with plans for a by-election to fill her Ward A position already underway. Her legacy of kindness, community service, and family devotion will resonate throughout the region for years to come.
As tributes continue to pour in, residents are encouraged to honor her memory by engaging in community service, reflecting her lifelong commitment to giving back.
This urgent news story serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on a community, leaving behind a legacy that inspires others.
