BREAKING NEWS: Rising rugby star Cooper Williams has received a monumental call-up to the Australia under 16s rugby union team. This announcement comes after his standout performance with the NSW Waratahs in the recent Super Rugby U16 championship, where he played a pivotal role in their grand final victory over Queensland.
The 16-year-old from Canowindra expressed his shock and excitement upon hearing the news. “I was in disbelief,” said Williams. “I just couldn’t believe it… I’m so grateful for the people around me, like my family.” The talented dual-code athlete has also made a name for himself in league, playing for the Western Suburbs Magpies in the Harold Matthews Cup.
Williams, a Year 11 student at St Stanislaus’ College, reflected on his journey with emotional gratitude. “There are thousands of boys playing football and rugby union in Australia, and I’m one of the 25 to make the side,” he stated. His father delivered the news over the phone, with his grandmother cheering in the background, making the moment even more special.
Beginning his rugby career at just seven years old with the Canowindra Pythons, Williams took a brief hiatus but returned to the sport in under 11s. “I just couldn’t stop playing,” he said. His passion for rugby intensified after joining Stannies in year 8, where he experienced a higher level of competition. “My first game was against Barker, and it was a big difference from what I was used to, but I enjoyed it,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Williams will travel to Tweed Heads in December for a crucial training camp. He is set to compete against Queensland under 17s on December 13. “It means a lot to play for Australia,” he added. “I’m grateful to be in such a good position with my football.”
Williams credits his coaches, notably Mr. English and Mr. Thurston, for his development. “They’ve taught me so much,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of mentorship in his journey.
As Williams prepares for this significant opportunity, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere. The rugby community is buzzing with anticipation for his performance, marking the beginning of what could be a remarkable career.
