UPDATE: Global retail giant Costco has just announced its plans to open a brand-new store in Alkimos, located in Perth’s fast-growing northern corridor. This development will anchor the new Alkimos Central retail center, marking a significant expansion for the company in Australia.
The State Government has confirmed Costco as the anchor tenant for the Home X Trade Hub, launching expressions of interest for additional commercial operators to join the 24ha retail precinct. This initiative is poised to reshape the shopping landscape in the area, further underscoring the region’s rapid growth.
The announcement comes on the heels of developer Centauria’s plans for a nearby 2.4ha site that will include a supermarket, childcare facility, and medical center by 2027. This project is part of a larger $33 million retail and services precinct aimed at bolstering local amenities.
Costco’s new store will be its third in Perth, joining existing locations at Perth Airport and Casuarina. Chris Tingman, Costco’s country manager for Australia and New Zealand, stated that the Alkimos location would feature a comprehensive range of goods and services, including discount fuel and specialty offerings like pet and travel insurance. “Costco sees Alkimos as dynamic and fast-growing, and we believe we can bring great value to the community,” Tingman emphasized.
John Carey, the Planning and Lands Minister, heralded this as a major victory for the region, noting that forecasts predict the population of the City of Wanneroo could nearly double by 2036. “The Home X trade hub at Alkimos Central will support local jobs, services, and economic development for years to come,” he said, highlighting the importance of this development for the community.
Residential property prices in Alkimos have surged dramatically, climbing from a median of $400,000 in May 2021 to an astonishing $730,000 today, as reported by realestate.com. Local MLA Lorna Clarke expressed her enthusiasm for the development, saying, “I often speak with local families who want more shops closer to home. I’m looking forward to having a convenient place for families to buy bulk and more local shops.”
The developers have indicated that the hub will offer flexible opportunities for tailored sites, allowing for both individual and multi-lot acquisitions. Interested parties are invited to submit their expressions of interest by November 26.
As this project unfolds, it promises to transform the retail landscape of Alkimos, providing residents with greater access to essential services and shopping options. The momentum around Costco’s entrance into the area signals a bright future for the local economy, making it an exciting time for both investors and community members alike.
