crackdown-on-alcohol-deliveries-5-500-fines-loom-for-drivers

URGENT UPDATE: Authorities have launched a stringent crackdown on alcohol deliveries ahead of the festive season, warning that delivery drivers could face fines of up to $5,500 for failing to check customer IDs. With the holiday season fast approaching, demand for same-day alcohol deliveries is skyrocketing, prompting regulators to enforce compliance more rigorously.

Officials from Liquor and Gaming NSW are intensifying efforts to ensure that major retailers like Dan Murphy’s, Liquorland, and BWS, as well as online platforms such as Jimmy Brings, UberEats, and DoorDash, adhere to strict legal requirements. The crackdown comes as more Australians are opting for online delivery services, often receiving their orders in less than 30 minutes.

Delivery drivers are now the focus of covert compliance audits aimed at ensuring they verify customers’ ages before handing over alcohol. Dimitri Argeres, Executive Director of Regulatory Operations at Liquor and Gaming NSW, stated, “The vast majority of operators are doing the right thing; however, it is a real concern that in the lead-up to summer we still have some delivery contractors not checking IDs when the handover happens.”

In a specific incident on November 11, a driver was caught delivering alcohol to Kibble Park, Gosford, without checking the buyer’s ID, highlighting a growing trend of non-compliance. “That final ID check is mandatory and is the most effective way of stopping under-18s accessing alcohol,” Argeres emphasized. He added that failing to perform this check increases the risk of alcohol-related harm, as some customers attempt to bypass standard checks usually enforced at licensed premises.

The operation also targets deliveries to alcohol-free and alcohol-prohibited zones, including Hyde Park in Sydney. “These areas are strictly regulated, and bringing liquor into them is an offence under the Act,” Argeres noted. He called for better geographic awareness and enhanced training for delivery personnel to ensure compliance with local restrictions.

Images from previous compliance stings reveal alarming practices, including delivery drivers handing over bottles of alcohol without verifying IDs, which could lead to severe penalties. Not only can those who neglect ID checks face fines of up to $5,500, but selling and supplying alcohol to minors can result in even harsher consequences, including fines up to $11,000 and potential jail time of up to 12 months.

As the festive season approaches, the focus on responsible alcohol delivery practices is more critical than ever. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious delivery practices.
