UPDATE: A team of donkeys in Bendigo is making headlines as they transform from chaos to coordination in an exciting new venture. Just weeks into their training, the Bendigo District Donkey Mule Group’s team—comprising eight donkeys—has shown remarkable progress, pulling together with precision and teamwork.
Standing in a paddock near Bendigo, Chris Johnson, vice-president of the group, recalls the initial pandemonium when the team first assembled at the beginning of 2025. “They were going everywhere,” she said, reflecting on the early days filled with challenges. This passionate group of owners was undeterred, inspired by a display of 28 Clydesdale horses showcasing their pulling prowess at New South Wales’ Good Old Days Festival.
The dedicated owners, including Jackie Kelly, Ruth Walker, Jenny and John Guidice, and Melissa and Graham Walker, decided to create Victoria’s only eight-donkey pulling team. With the guidance of experts Laurie Jensen and John Murdock, they embarked on a mission to teach their donkeys the skills necessary for pulling carts—despite the animals having zero prior experience.
Training sessions have become a blend of hard work and fun. Chris emphasizes the importance of keeping the donkeys engaged and happy. “Their ears are very expressive, and their body language lets you know how they feel,” she explained. Unlike the droopy-eared Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, these donkeys are lively and attentive, showing clear signs of interest during training.
Looking ahead, the team is set on showcasing their unique capabilities, aiming to prove the impressive skills of a well-trained donkey team. The excitement among the owners is palpable as they prepare for future events and performances.
The Bendigo District Donkey Mule Group continues to train diligently, fostering a bond that extends beyond mere teamwork. As they progress, this donkey dream team is not just about pulling carts; it’s about community spirit, teamwork, and the joy of working with these remarkable animals.
Stay tuned for more updates as they gear up for their upcoming showcases, demonstrating what a kick-ass donkey team can achieve. This story is just getting started, and the community is eager to witness their journey unfold!
