UPDATE: Donnybrook has secured a significant victory against Melton Centrals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Shield, battling through challenging weather conditions this past Saturday, July 15, 2023. Despite heavy rain leading to numerous matches being called off, Donnybrook showcased resilience and skill, clinching a commanding win.
The match commenced under less-than-ideal conditions, with Donnybrook president Noel Seipolt expressing frustration over the weather’s impact on the season. “We were on and off about 100 times,” he stated. “The conditions were pretty ordinary and we probably shouldn’t have got out there and played.”
On day one, Donnybrook established a formidable total of 6-339, powered by an impressive 156 runs from opener Puneet Sharma. Entering day two, Melton Centrals resumed at 0-42 but struggled against Donnybrook’s bowling attack, ultimately being bowled out for just 163 runs. Pardeep Raman led the charge with an outstanding performance, taking 5 wickets for 40 runs.
Seipolt expressed confidence in his team’s performance, noting that Melton Centrals is currently at the bottom of the ladder. “The guys batted really well,” he remarked, highlighting the team’s potential as they move forward this season.
After five rounds, Donnybrook now holds a 4-1 record and sits third on the ladder, with aspirations for a grand final appearance. “Things are going really well, touchwood,” Seipolt added. “With the team we have this year, we’re hoping to go further. It would be good to win our premiership in our 50th year celebration.”
In other matches, Roxburgh Park also emerged victorious, defeating Williamstown Congs. After being bowled out for 141 on day one, the Falcons restricted the Congs to 132 runs, thanks to a stellar five-wicket haul from Sohaib Bhutta. Meanwhile, Jacana faced a stalemate against Wyndham Vale, ending the match with 7-152 in response to the Vales’ 256.
