UPDATE: Double demerit points are now in effect in Albury as of December 24, part of an urgent festive road safety blitz running until January 4. Albury Police are ramping up enforcement to ensure safe travel during the busy holiday season.

In a critical announcement, Albury Inspector Scott Trewhella confirmed that the operation targets speeding, drug and alcohol offenses, dangerous driving, and distracted driving. “This is a time where we see a lot more people on our roads, and we just need people to slow down and take care,” Trewhella stated, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance.

Authorities report an increased presence of the Traffic and Highway Patrol command alongside local police to deter reckless behavior. “You’re going to see a lot of us,” Trewhella added. “Please do the right thing. Our job is to keep you safe.”

The double demerit points will apply to offenses such as speeding, not wearing a motorcycle helmet, seatbelt violations, and using mobile phones while driving. As families hit the roads for holiday celebrations, police are urging everyone to be cautious and considerate.

Transport for NSW executive director Rob Austin echoed the call for safety, warning of heavy traffic and potential delays during this peak travel period. “We want everyone to arrive safely wherever they are going over the summer holidays,” Austin said. He advised motorists to prepare ahead of their journeys, slow down, and exercise extra caution.

In a related safety message, Bright Police are urging bicycle, e-bike, and e-scooter riders to wear helmets. Recent incidents, including a serious crash at the Mystic Bike Park, highlighted the importance of helmet use. A rider lost control and collided with a tree, necessitating a high-angle rescue. Fortunately, they were wearing a helmet, underscoring its critical role in protecting riders.

As the holiday season progresses, authorities are committed to keeping roads safe for all travelers. The community is encouraged to share this vital information and stay alert during their holiday journeys.
