Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will headline the upcoming TEDxWollongong event, taking place on March 7, 2026, at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. This local science icon leads a diverse lineup of speakers, including business leaders, innovators, and creatives, all set to explore the theme of “Lookout.” Inspired by the region’s stunning natural features, the event promises to engage the audience with a mix of thought-provoking and entertaining presentations.

Having spent his formative years in Wollongong, Dr Karl expressed enthusiasm about returning to his hometown for the event. “It’s a chance to mess with people’s minds,” he remarked, noting the flexibility of the theme. “It can oscillate between very serious and very funny,” he added, although he is still finalizing the specifics of his talk as the date approaches.

Local Roots and Professional Journey

Dr Karl’s connection to Wollongong runs deep. He attended both Little Flower and Edmund Rice College, later studying at the university when it was part of the University of New South Wales. His early career included a notable role at the steelworks, where he was responsible for testing steel used in the Westgate Bridge. Reflecting on this experience, he recalled, “One of my jobs straight out of school at the age of 19 was testing the steel. I learned how to do it and got advice from a metallurgist.”

His tenure at the steelworks was not without challenges. Dr Karl recounted a significant issue that arose when the fatigue limit of the steel did not meet specifications. He explained that the fatigue limit refers to the maximum stress a material can endure without breaking. After presenting his findings to his supervisor, he was met with skepticism. “He said, ‘Look, I wouldn’t be unhappy if you went and checked your figures and found you had made a mistake,’” Dr Karl recalled.

After thorough re-testing and discussions with a fellow physicist, he realized his supervisor’s expectation was to falsify the results. “What he wanted me to do was to fake the result,” he stated, a decision he ultimately refused to make.

Diverse Topics and Engaging Presentations

The TEDxWollongong event will feature a wide array of topics, including psychology, robotics, artificial intelligence, romance scams, and local innovations with global relevance. Event director Fairlie Hamilton emphasized the importance of curating a diverse range of speakers to ensure a dynamic experience. “We’ve tried to balance excellent ideas with diverse voices, innovation, and something fun for the audience,” she noted.

Hamilton expressed hope that some of the talks might achieve viral status, but her primary concern is the overall experience for attendees. “More important than that is that our ticket holders have a great experience and that the event itself is really engaging and thought-provoking,” she stated.

As the event approaches, the excitement surrounding TEDxWollongong continues to grow, heralding a day of inspiration and intellectual engagement. Dr Karl’s return to Wollongong, alongside a talented roster of speakers, is set to create a memorable experience for all participants.
