Once known for its small zoo in the late 1950s through the 1970s, the Dungowan Hotel is recalling its vibrant past as it prepares for a lineup of community events. Former publican Kevin Smith reminisces about a time when the hotel housed exotic animals including emus, quolls, and even a monkey named Chico. “It was huge,” he recalled, highlighting its significance as a local tourist attraction.
The hotel’s transformation is spearheaded by new owners Susie and Grant Biffin, who took over in late 2022. After a jovial conversation over “too many beers” with Kevin, they decided to breathe new life into the venue. “We understand how important the pub is to the community,” Susie stated, emphasizing their commitment to fostering local engagement.
In an effort to revitalize the pub’s offerings, the Biffins have already introduced engaging events such as pig racing, yabbie races on Australia Day, and sheep penning. The inaugural sheep penning event took place over the June long weekend, marking a significant milestone in the hotel’s rejuvenation efforts. “We’re trying to draw people from out of town and get them to come and have a good day out,” Grant shared.
Historically, the Dungowan Hotel dates back to 1868, originally known as “The Union Hotel.” Located halfway between Tamworth and Nundle, it served as a crucial stop for travelers during the gold mining boom. “They used to change the horses here,” Kevin explained, recalling the hotel’s long-standing role in the community.
The hotel has witnessed a variety of changes over the decades, including the relocation of its premises in 1878 due to flooding issues. However, it also has a darker history, having experienced a tragic fire in 1913 that claimed the life of a young boy. Despite these challenges, the Dungowan Hotel has remained a cornerstone of the community.
Kevin, who served as the publican for 24 years, noted the evolution of societal norms and regulations around drinking, particularly regarding women and children’s access to public bars. “You’ve got to be patient, you’ve got to be a marriage counsellor, a bank manager, an adviser, a confidante… you’ve got to be a bit of everything,” he advised, reflecting on the multifaceted role of a publican.
With the Biffins at the helm, the Dungowan Hotel is poised for a bright future. They have opened access from the bar to the beer garden, enhancing the overall experience for patrons.
