UPDATE: A coroner has confirmed that a 16-year-old boy’s tragic death in Tasmania was caused by improper modifications made to his quad bike by his father. The findings, released on October 3, 2023, underscore the critical dangers of do-it-yourself vehicle maintenance, especially for young riders.
The boy’s body was discovered on a gravel forestry road after a fatal crash linked to poorly fitted aftermarket wheels. Coroner Simon Cooper revealed that the rear wheel of the red Honda quad bike detached due to incorrect wheel nuts. This incident highlights an urgent reminder for safety concerning quad bike usage, especially among children.
Authorities report that the modifications were made just two weeks prior to the fatal accident. The coroner stated that the nuts used were tapered instead of flat, which led to one of the wheels failing. In a heartbreaking revelation, Cooper noted, “Tragically, the aftermarket rims were bought off eBay and fitted by (his) father just two weeks before (the boy’s) death.”
Witnesses observed the boy riding “a little too quickly” on public roads, despite the bike being unregistered. At the time of the crash, the teenager was not wearing a properly fitted helmet, which was later found several meters from his body.
Since 2011, there have been 234 fatalities in quad bike accidents across Australia, making them one of the leading causes of death on farms. Safety experts, including SafeWork Australia, strongly advise against children under 16 riding adult-sized quad bikes, emphasizing the inherent dangers of these vehicles.
While Coroner Cooper did not issue formal recommendations, he stressed the importance of using the correct nuts to secure quad bike wheels. He cautioned that parts purchased online must be verified for their suitability. “No one should fit wheels to quad bikes without appropriate experience, expertise, or qualifications,” he stated.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder to parents and guardians about the potential risks associated with quad bike modifications. As fatalities continue to rise, it is imperative that safety standards and regulations are enforced to prevent further loss of life.
