The Werribee Giants delivered an impressive performance in the Baseball Victoria summer league, achieving a significant upset against the Essendon Bombers with a score of 12-7. This victory marks the Giants’ third win of the season, coming as they sit at the bottom of the league table while Essendon occupies a top-two position.

Giants coach Cameron Brown expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting the importance of such a result for the group. “We were rapt with the whole thing, we did really well,” Brown remarked. This win represents the second time the Giants have triumphed over the Bombers this season and their first victory since November 11.

The game began on a challenging note for the Giants as they found themselves trailing 7-2 after three innings. However, they rallied in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to narrow the deficit. “They had the momentum and it was going their way,” Brown said. The Giants quickly transformed the game, bringing the score to 7-6 and eventually securing a one-run lead. Brown emphasized that the team performed exceptionally well, stating, “It was a clean game. We were the better team on the day.”

The return of key players such as Andrew Christou, Addison Bishop-Worn, and Simon Riches played a crucial role in the Giants’ success. Additionally, Wes De Jong pitched for the first time in several weeks, contributing positively to the team’s performance.

Looking ahead, Brown hopes to build on this momentum with upcoming matches against Williamstown and Fitzroy. “It was good recognition for the hard work, and we’re trying to do that in every game,” he noted. With five rounds remaining in the season, the Giants are eager to continue their upward trajectory.

In the women’s competition, the Giants also excelled, achieving a commanding 17-0 victory against Blackburn. The team made a strong start, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Currently, the Giants sit atop the table, one win ahead of Melbourne, with a crucial match scheduled against them on Saturday.

As the season progresses, the Werribee Giants are determined to maintain their form and finish strong, with upcoming matches against Springvale and the anticipated clash against Melbourne on the horizon.
