URGENT UPDATE: Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) is undergoing a significant leadership transition as four key board members, including outgoing chair Diane James, depart, paving the way for new appointments. This change comes as the organization faces ongoing challenges, including recent flooding and the impact of COVID-19.

Since joining G-MW in February 2019, the board has been instrumental in navigating turbulent times, consistently providing vital guidance to executive management.

“Their support has been invaluable in steering G-MW through a period of substantial transformation,”

said Charmaine Quick, managing director of G-MW.

The departure of Diane James, who has played a pivotal role since her appointment in 2018, marks a bittersweet moment for the organization. Under her leadership, G-MW has achieved remarkable milestones, including a 10 percent price reduction for customers and enhanced financial performance. Her work on strategic initiatives like the transition to net zero emissions and modernization of water delivery systems has left a lasting legacy.

The board also bids farewell to Patrick McNamara, who chaired the Project Control Group, ensuring the successful delivery of the Connections Project, which resulted in 429 gigalitres of water savings. His leadership was crucial in keeping projects on budget and on time.

Additionally, Jonathan Koop has been recognized for strengthening G-MW’s financial governance as chair of the Risk, Audit and Finance Committee. His efforts have significantly improved internal controls and risk management, fostering trust with oversight partners. David McKenzie, as chair of the Service Planning Committee, guided G-MW towards a more commercially aware service planning approach, leveraging his extensive water industry knowledge.

While the organization reflects on the contributions of these departing members, it is also poised for new beginnings. Five new board members were appointed last month, including Justin Hanney, who takes over as chair. Hanney brings regional expertise from his previous roles, including chief executive of Regional Development Victoria. He will be joined by new members Rob McMillan, Sue Oddie, Liz Ryan, and Paul Weller, who are eager to contribute to G-MW’s ongoing mission.

Quick expressed optimism about the new board’s capabilities, stating,

“I look forward to working with our new members to continue the momentum we’ve built.”

As Goulburn-Murray Water transitions into this new chapter, the organization remains committed to its strategic goals and the well-being of its customers. The leadership changes signify a pivotal moment for G-MW, emphasizing the importance of innovation and adaptability in the face of evolving challenges.
