goulburn-welcomes-new-minister-pierre-van-blommestein-amid-change

UPDATE: Goulburn Uniting Church has a fresh new leader. Pierre van Blommestein, recently appointed minister, has officially taken the helm, bringing a wealth of experiences from his past in South Africa and a vision for community engagement.

Just announced, Reverend van Blommestein, who relocated from Bribie Island, Queensland, is embracing Goulburn’s distinct four seasons, a stark contrast to the subtropical climate he left behind. “In Queensland, you get ‘hot’ and ‘not so hot’ — that’s about it,” he said, expressing excitement for a more varied climate.

But it’s not just the weather that shapes his approach. Having served as a military chaplain during the South African Border War, van Blommestein witnessed the grim realities of conflict, an experience he describes as profoundly impactful. “I found a place among the medical team dealing with wounded soldiers and civilians caught in crossfire,” he recounted, highlighting the emotional weight of his past.

The reverend’s military service spanned nearly two decades, concluding in 1999. He emphasizes that this background prepares him for difficult conversations and moments of crisis within the community. “My role is to be there for people during both good and bad times,” he stated.

Van Blommestein’s commitment to social justice was evident during his tenure in South Africa, where he challenged apartheid laws. “The church believed it was none of the government’s business who marries who,” he said, reflecting on his efforts to provide marriage services to interracial couples despite legal constraints.

Now in Goulburn, he is eager to connect proactively with the community, shifting away from traditional reliance on church attendance. “The game has changed,” he noted, emphasizing the need for creative outreach to individuals and groups across the Southern Tablelands.

As part of his new role, van Blommestein plans to incorporate contemporary music into Sunday services to attract a wider audience. He will kickstart this initiative by performing at a Christmas lunch for those in need, demonstrating his commitment to community service.

With his unique background and fresh vision, Pierre van Blommestein is poised to make a significant impact in Goulburn. For more information, contact the Goulburn Uniting Church at +91 88867 45500.
