The fair, now in its 11th year, was a resounding success, according to event coordinator Julianne Salway, who expressed gratitude for the ideal weather that allowed participants to enjoy the festivities without the usual blustery conditions. “We couldn’t have asked for better weather,” she said.
Attendees from as far as New Zealand, Sydney, and Wollongong flocked to the historic Goulburn Waterworks, which served as a perfect backdrop for a day filled with grand teapot races, hobby horse competitions, live music, and a bustling market. The fair continues to gain popularity, with more participants than ever before.

The fair was inspired by a trip Ms. Salway took to London in 2011, where she attended a Steampunk exhibition at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum. This experience sparked the idea of hosting a similar event at Goulburn’s own waterworks, which first took place in 2014. Since then, the Steampunk Fair has expanded significantly, showcasing the community’s passion for this imaginative genre.
A significant figure in the fair’s history, the late Bruce McDonald, played a crucial role in restoring the historic Appleby Beam Engine at the Waterworks. His efforts in the 1950s saved the engine from being scrapped, allowing it to become a centerpiece of the fair. Bruce McDonald passed away in June of 2023, but his legacy continues to inspire those who attend the event.
This year’s fair also saw a record turnout, leading organizers to expand their space to accommodate the growing interest. As the Steampunk Victoriana Fair continues to evolve, it draws in not only dedicated fans of the genre but also those curious about its unique themes.
