UPDATE: Demolition of the former Greenparkes Garden Centre has just been completed, paving the way for a new motel and childcare center. As of November 2023, the site located at the corner of Forbes Road and Medlyn Street is undergoing rapid transformation, signaling an exciting development for the community.

The Parkes Shire Council has confirmed that the old structures, including the Cedar Cafe and various storage bays, have been fully cleared, marking a significant step in revitalizing this long-vacant area. The approved plans indicate a $2,020,700 investment for a single-story motel featuring 22 rooms, alongside a childcare center designed to serve local families.

Demolition work began in October 2023, with the last remnants of the old site removed by the end of November. The new motel will occupy the front portion of the lot next to Forbes Road, while the childcare center is designated for the rear, closest to Lawson Street. Each facility will offer essential services to the community, with the motel including on-site manager facilities, a private laundry, and 26 car parking spaces.

During a recent council meeting on November 18, Deputy Mayor Marg Applebee expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s great to see something happening there finally. It’s a fantastic space.” She urged for clarity on the construction timeline, noting the long-standing vacancy of the site.

Planning Director Annalise Teale confirmed the developer’s commitment to moving forward. “They have a construction certificate currently submitted for the childcare center and are expected to lodge the certificate for the motel very soon,” she stated, highlighting the urgency of the project.

The development plans underwent public exhibition prior to council approval, receiving no objections from the community, an indicator of strong local support. The childcare center is approved to include approximately 20 car parking spaces, enhancing accessibility for families.

With construction anticipated to begin shortly, the Greenparkes site is set to become a hub of activity, offering essential services and revitalizing the area. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as this exciting project unfolds.

This development represents not just a physical change but a renewed hope for the community, which has been waiting for years for this site to be utilized effectively. With both facilities nearing the construction phase, the future of Greenparkes looks brighter than ever.
