UPDATE: Griffith is poised to host a crucial silent vigil on November 28, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at the Kooyoo Street Plaza. This event, organized by the Griffith Local Domestic Violence Committee, Soroptimists International Griffith, and Linking Communities Network, aims to raise urgent awareness about the devastating impact of domestic violence.

This vigil comes as shocking new data reveals that 42 women and children have tragically lost their lives to domestic violence in Australia this year alone. In stark contrast, the total recorded for all of 2024 was 81 fatalities. These figures, reported by Counting Dead Women Australia and Destroy the Joint, underline the ongoing epidemic of violence against vulnerable individuals.

Participants are encouraged to join the vigil, which will primarily consist of silent reflection, allowing the community to honor the memories of those lost. Organizers emphasize the importance of collective action in combating domestic violence, stating, “It is important that we all stand together to highlight the epidemic of violence occurring towards women and children, not only in Australia but around the world.”

The event serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address domestic violence, a crisis affecting individuals regardless of age, ethnicity, or background. As the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence from November 25 to December 10, Griffith’s vigil stands out as a local beacon of hope and solidarity.

Community members are not required to stay for the entire hour, but every moment counts in making a statement against domestic violence. The silence shared at this vigil will echo the voices of those who can no longer speak.

Join Griffith’s community in this vital stand against violence. Your presence matters.
