UPDATE: A 45-year-old woman has been arrested in Griffith for allegedly shoplifting a $99 spot cleaner from a local department store. The incident unfolded on July 29 at approximately 7:45 PM, prompting an urgent police response.
According to authorities, the woman entered the store on Banna Avenue and scanned five low-cost items totaling just $2.40 before attempting to leave with the spot cleaner. Staff intervened as she exited, leading to a confrontation where police were called to the scene. Officers arrived shortly thereafter and discovered that the woman had an outstanding arrest warrant, resulting in her immediate detention.
Upon further investigation at the Griffith Police Station, officers uncovered additional items in her handbag believed to be stolen. The woman has been formally charged with theft and is set to appear before the Griffith Local Court at a later date.
In a related incident, police are cautioning the public about online scams following a report of a local man who lost $1,000 while purchasing a second-hand phone. The victim, searching for an iPhone Pro Max, met with a seller via Facebook Marketplace on August 3 near Deniliquin. After completing the transaction, he discovered the phone was locked and registered to a rental company.
Police urge residents to exercise caution when buying items online, emphasizing the importance of verifying the functionality of products and obtaining seller details. This warning comes in light of increasing reports of scams targeting unsuspecting buyers.
Authorities continue to advise the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. With both incidents highlighting the growing concerns over retail theft and online fraud, residents are reminded to stay informed and cautious in their shopping activities.
