UPDATE: A groundbreaking therapy initiative featuring guinea pigs, Cherry and Bobby, is set to launch on December 1 in the Central West Region of Australia. This innovative program aims to help children combat anxiety and fear, offering a unique connection that many have been missing.
Early childhood educator Emma Jenkins, who has worked across various early childhood centers and a rural school, emphasizes the urgent need for emotional support among children. “Many kids are withdrawn and face behavioral issues,” she stated during an interview, with the calming presence of the guinea pigs at her side. Jenkins believes that pets provide essential companionship that can be a lifeline for children who may not have stable home environments.
The presence of animals has been shown to significantly improve wellbeing, especially for children experiencing social isolation or mental health challenges, including autism. “It slows them down,” Jenkins remarked, highlighting a boy who transformed from reserved to engaged through interaction with the guinea pigs. “They just need something to look forward to, something they may not have at home,” she said.
Jenkins, who has spent over twenty years advocating for pet therapy, first became involved after rescuing a guinea pig from her previous job at Pet Warehouse. Memories of caring for up to 250 guinea pigs in her grandmother’s apartment fuel her passion for this project. “It’s been at the back of my head for a long, long time,” she shared, underscoring her commitment to improving children’s lives through animal therapy.
The upcoming program, Squeak and Wheek, has been officially trained under Velma’s Pets As Therapy and marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the region. Jenkins aims to cater not only to young people but also to seniors and those facing anxiety and stress. “There’s definitely a market for those in between who suffer with anxiety and stress,” she added.
As the launch date approaches, Jenkins is optimistic about the positive changes that Cherry and Bobby will bring to children’s lives. “When trialing the pets in a classroom setting, the students became different kids,” she noted, emphasizing the transformative effect of animal companionship.
This urgent initiative is poised to make a substantial impact on children’s mental health, providing them with the comfort and joy that only a pet can offer. Stay tuned for the launch of this pioneering therapy program, which promises to reshape the way children interact with their emotions.
