UPDATE: On March 3, 2026, marking World Hearing Day, a pivotal new organization, Hearing Research International, officially launched in Toronto, Canada. This international research foundation aims to revolutionize the fields of Hearing Health and Deaf Studies, addressing the urgent global crisis of hearing loss through innovative research and collaboration.

With hearing loss impacting millions worldwide, this launch emphasizes the critical need for transformative research that influences public policy and enhances the quality of life for Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The foundation has already awarded over $1.46 million in research grants since 2022, supporting projects that enhance accessibility, communication equity, and social participation.

The transformation from the former CHS Global Partnerships for Research & Innovation to Hearing Research International represents a significant evolution in approach, enhancing clarity and impact. Julia N. Dumanian, President & CEO of Canadian Hearing Services, stated, “This evolution is more than a name change—it’s a statement of purpose. Hearing Research International exists to accelerate research that improves hearing health, advances Deaf Studies, and strengthens equity worldwide.”

This launch is timely as the World Health Organization has highlighted hearing loss as a growing public health priority. The new foundation’s focus is not just on research but also on aligning with global health initiatives that advocate for the rights and needs of Deaf communities. Hearing Research International will prioritize two key research streams: improving Hearing Health and supporting Deaf Studies focused on language and culture.

The urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated. With the increasing global burden of hearing loss, the foundation’s work aims to ensure that research is not only innovative but also accessible and impactful. The goal is to create a future where improved hearing health is a reality for all, particularly among marginalized communities.

Going forward, Hearing Research International will deepen its global collaboration efforts and enhance research leadership, ensuring that the voices of Deaf communities are at the forefront of its initiatives. By fostering partnerships with researchers, institutions, and policymakers, the foundation aims to drive lasting change across the globe.

As this organization embarks on its mission, it promises to be a catalyst for collaboration, shaping research priorities that will have a meaningful impact on society for generations to come. The launch underscores an urgent call to action: it is time to prioritize hearing health and empower communities worldwide.
