UPDATE: The Hillside Sharks delivered a stunning performance on July 15, 2023, crushing Avondale Heights with a final score of 16.21 (117) to 5.10 (40) in the Essendon District Football League Division 1. This decisive victory propels the Sharks into a strong position as they pursue a double chance in the league.
The Sharks dominated the game from the outset, leading by a remarkable 42 points at halftime. Despite a late surge from Avondale Heights in the final quarter, the outcome was never in doubt. Hillside’s coach, Mo Kaakour, expressed pride in his team’s consistent football, stating, “The performance was great against a pretty good side.”
Hillside’s strategy focused on controlling stoppages and applying relentless pressure, which paid off as they generated repeat inside 50s even in challenging windy conditions. Coach Kaakour highlighted their superior ball use, which prevented Avondale from gaining momentum.
Star forward Josh Covelli shone with three goals, while teammates Fort, Nat Caruso, and Khalil Kaakour each contributed two goals. The Sharks showcased a well-rounded team effort, with standout performances from players like Noak Asciak, Tristan Rudic, and Robbie Castello.
Asciak, in his first full season at senior level, has emerged as a key player, effectively marking Avondale’s best hybrid forward. “He took on the role against Danko [Bzenic] and perfected that,” Kaakour noted, emphasizing Asciak’s versatility in different positions.
Looking ahead, the Sharks are set to face Roxburgh Park in their next match, with the return of captain Zak Wunhym expected to bolster the squad. The Sharks are still dealing with injuries, including Lucas Falli and Nicholas Karakyriakos, while they hope to see Mitch Hearne back in action soon.
This victory elevates the Sharks to third place on the ladder, just ahead of Avondale Heights, and sets the stage for an intense battle against Roxburgh Park, which Kaakour warned will not be easy despite their current standings.
In addition to the men’s success, the Sharks women’s team also celebrated a dominant win, defeating Greenvale 21.16 (142) to 0.1 (1). This double triumph underscores the growing strength of Hillside across both divisions, making them a force to be reckoned with in the league.
