homeschool-team-brick-buddies-races-to-62-000-for-lego-challenge

URGENT UPDATE: A group of six homeschooled children from Tasmania is on a mission to raise $62,000 for an international Lego competition in Mexico. The team, known as the “Brick Buddies,” comprises Esther Scrimgeour (13), Hugo White (11), Jeremiah Stott (10), Asher Scrimgeour (9), Phoebe White (8), and Poppy White (13), and they’re racing against time to fund their trip.

The team is gearing up for the four-day competition after successfully advancing through the rookie league, regionals, and nationals since learning about the First Lego League in May of last year. “We’re not just building with bricks; we’re representing Australia and Tasmania,” said coach Anna White, who is also the mother of three team members.

The Brick Buddies plan to showcase their Australian pride with flags and local merchandise like Vegemite and Tim Tams during the competition. However, Mrs. White emphasized the significant financial challenge ahead. “We’re keeping a lid on our excitement because of the funds required for this trip,” she explained.

To achieve their ambitious funding goal, the team is actively selling chocolates, mowing lawns, and undertaking various fundraising activities. “Our goal is $62,000, which is pretty massive, but flights are expensive,” Mrs. White added.

Lego has provided the team with more than just a creative outlet; it serves as a rich learning environment. “The STEM aspects of learning coding and iterating on projects are invaluable,” Mrs. White stated. The competition also requires public speaking and collaboration with professionals for feedback, integrating various subjects like English and science.

Mrs. White chose to homeschool her children to be directly involved in their education. “I wouldn’t want to miss out on that,” she noted. The Brick Buddies are not just building structures; they are building life skills and community connections.

As the competition date approaches in May 2024, the urgency for support escalates. To contribute to their journey, visit https://brickbuddies.org/donate. Stay tuned for updates as the Brick Buddies work hard to achieve their dreams while showcasing the best of Australia on an international stage.
