UPDATE: Hoppers Crossing’s quest to defend its title has come to a devastating conclusion as the team fell to Yarraville-Seddon by eight points in the Western Football League Division 1 semi-final on Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval.

In a dramatic matchup, the Warriors found themselves trailing by 37 points before mounting a fierce comeback, scoring the next seven goals to take a narrow lead late in the game. However, Yarraville-Seddon rallied back, with Lachlan Green sealing the victory by scoring the final two goals, ultimately winning the match 70-62.

President John Semertzidis expressed disappointment in the team’s slow start, attributing the loss to an inability to capitalize on favorable conditions. “I think the first quarter was an issue and cost us,” he stated. “This time last year, the ball was bouncing in our favour. This time this year, it was bouncing towards other teams.”

The Warriors, who had a stellar season improving their home-and-away record from 8.5 wins last year to 13, had high hopes for a successful finals series. Semertzidis noted the disappointment among players but remained optimistic about the team’s future. “We have a fairly young group and we’ll regroup and start again next year,” he said.

Star player Josh Pickess led the effort with four goals, while teammates Ashlin Brown, Braden Ferrari, Anarkiikonda Van Wills, Liam McMahon, and Tevyn Wanigasekera also contributed significantly despite the loss.

Looking ahead, Semertzidis revealed that many key players, including Ferrari and VFL-listed Bailey Young, have recommitted for 2026. He emphasized that the team is eager to build on this season’s progress, stating, “We improved as a side holistically through the year.”

With head coach Jared Polec secured until the end of 2027, the Warriors will focus on strengthening their roster, particularly in midfield, during the off-season. The return of vice-captain Riley Fisher from injury will also be pivotal for the team’s future.

As Hoppers Crossing reflects on their season, the commitment to improvement remains strong. “It’s disappointing to be knocked out, but we also know where we’re at,” Semertzidis concluded. The Warriors are determined to make their next campaign even more successful.
