UPDATE: Hume Council has just approved a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing spending equality across its suburbs. During the council meeting on October 13, 2023, Cr Sam Misho introduced the Local Amenity Fund, which will allocate 10 percent of annual rates revenue by ward to suburb-specific projects, addressing disparities in funding.
This decision comes in response to a recently tabled report that unveiled the current rates distribution among suburbs, revealing significant inequalities in investment. Cr Misho emphasized that while suburbs like Broadmeadows and Sunbury benefit from substantial investments due to their growing populations, areas such as Meadow Heights feel overlooked. “In Meadow Heights, nearly 15,000 residents will contribute about $25 million in rates over four years, yet the planned capital works expenditure is only $2.8 million,” he stated.
The Local Amenity Fund aims to directly address these concerns by retaining a portion of the rates revenue for impactful local projects. “The fund will focus on small, high-impact works that residents feel every day,” Cr Misho explained, highlighting improvements such as street parking, public toilets, zebra crossings, and footpaths.
This fund will be further explored during the council’s upcoming budget planning weekend, with priority packages for Roxburgh Park, Meadow Heights, and other underfunded suburbs slated for inclusion in the 2026-27 draft budget. The council aims to ensure that all communities receive equitable support and investment, addressing the feelings of neglect some areas experience.
The implications of this initiative are significant, as residents across Hume anticipate improvements that could enhance their daily lives. With the council’s commitment to a more equitable distribution of funds, local communities are hopeful for visible changes in their neighborhoods.
As this story develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed about the council’s plans and advocate for their community’s needs. The urgency of this initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring every suburb in Hume receives its fair share of funding, paving the way for a more balanced and inclusive municipality.
