UPDATE: Hume Council is taking immediate action to honor the profound legacy of the Ford Motor Company with a new public art initiative. At a pivotal meeting on October 13, 2023, council members unveiled plans for a project that celebrates the historic Broadmeadows assembly plant, which played a crucial role in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
The Ford assembly plant, operational from 1959 until 2016, was not just a major employer but a cornerstone of the community, particularly for new arrivals to Australia. The council’s proposal includes the installation of light boxes featuring up to six illuminated displays around the Fordgate shopping precinct. These displays will showcase archival images of iconic Ford vehicles and the historic plant, enhancing local heritage while illuminating the area at night.
