UPDATE: Hume Council has just announced a bold initiative to rename seven local drains to their historical roots as creeks, a move that could reshape the perception of waterways in the area. This proposal was agreed upon during a council meeting on July 28, 2023, and aims to contact relevant authorities, including Geographic Names Victoria and Melbourne Water, for necessary approvals.
The drains under consideration for renaming include the Otway Crescent Drain and Warantina Drain in Broadmeadows, Broad Street Drain in Attwood, Somerset Road Drain in Campbellfield, Heyson Drive Drain in Sunbury, Greenvale Drain in Greenvale, and Shanklands Drain in Roxburgh Park.
Councillor Karen Sherry spearheaded the proposal, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these waterways’ historical and cultural significance. She referenced David Widdowson’s work, Down the Drain – Lost Tributaries of the Moonee Ponds Creek, highlighting how urban development has transformed vibrant creeks into mere underground drains.
“After the suburbs were cleared, creeks were left as more or less like dirt line drains and at risk of major erosion after heavy rain,” Cr Sherry stated. This name change is not just a cosmetic adjustment; it symbolizes a shift in how communities value their natural resources.
She further remarked, “Calling them a drain is a mistake of the past and does not reflect the true value of these places.” The council seeks to gain written support from the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people to strengthen their case for the name changes.
This proposal has immediate implications for local residents and environmental advocates who have long sought recognition of the ecological and cultural importance of these waterways. The change could foster a greater appreciation for local ecosystems and encourage sustainable practices moving forward.
As the council awaits feedback from the relevant authorities, community members are encouraged to voice their opinions on this transformative initiative. The upcoming weeks will be critical as discussions unfold regarding the future of Hume’s waterways.
