UPDATE: Hume Council is calling for immediate community feedback on its draft Graffiti Management Policy, aiming to combat the persistent issue of graffiti vandalism throughout the municipality. The council’s efforts come after recent discussions highlighted the severe impact of graffiti on the community, with Cr Daniel English expressing frustration at the current situation, labeling the ongoing vandalism as “disgusting.”
In a council meeting on November 24, 2023, Cr Naim Kurt revealed that the council spends approximately $230,000 annually on graffiti clean-up efforts, stressing the need for enhanced measures to improve the city’s appearance. “There’s a feeling across our community that we can put in a little bit more to make our community look like a better place,” he stated.
The draft policy outlines various preventative measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras, improved public lighting, and initiatives for public art. Additionally, the council plans to launch education programs within schools to inform residents about the emotional and financial toll of graffiti vandalism.
Community members are encouraged to provide their insights on this crucial policy, with the feedback window open until February 5, 2024. The council aims to incorporate this input into the final version of the policy before its adoption in a future meeting.
This is an urgent opportunity for residents to voice their opinions on how to effectively address graffiti in Hume, making their community a cleaner and safer place. To participate, visit https://participate.hume.vic.gov.au/draft-graffiti-management-policy.
