hume-council-urges-memorial-for-migrant-communities-at-park

BREAKING: Hume Council is pushing for a memorial at Greenvale Reservoir Park to honor the migrant communities that once gathered there, particularly the Turkish community. The park is set to reopen in late December 2023 after extensive renovations, and officials are advocating for a plaque or statue to commemorate its rich cultural history.

Councillor Naim Kurt emphasized the importance of recognizing the park’s significance, stating, “Can there be some sort of plaque that recognizes that unofficial [Turkish] name… Ford’un Arkası” (The Park behind Ford)? He noted the lack of multicultural names across the municipality, highlighting the need for acknowledgment of this vibrant community.

The park, which has been closed since 2014, not only served as a gathering place for the Turkish community but also for various Middle Eastern communities. Councillor Steve Gagen remarked on the double impact felt by these communities when the park closed, followed closely by the shutdown of the Ford factory in 2016. “It is with great joy that we see… the southern part of the park is opening with improved facilities, an additional 26 hectares of parkland,” he said.

Officials are considering more than just a plaque, with discussions around a larger memorial that reflects the culinary heritage of the area. “Given the culinary interest of the place, I thought perhaps a big kebab,” proposed Councillor Gagen, emphasizing the need for a tribute that resonates with the community’s history.

Councillor John Hadad added that the park’s legacy includes many groups, not solely the Turkish community, underscoring the diverse cultural fabric that has contributed to its history.

The newly renovated park will feature upgraded footpaths, car parks, picnic areas, toilet facilities, and drinking fountains, making it a welcoming space for all visitors. With the opening just weeks away, the council’s advocacy for a memorial is gaining momentum, and community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposed memorial.

WHAT’S NEXT: As the park prepares for its grand reopening, community members and local leaders await the council’s decisions regarding the memorial. Residents are invited to engage in discussions about how best to honor the rich cultural history of the park.
