UPDATE: A captivating new photography collection by Illawarra Mercury’s long-serving photographer, Adam McLean, is set to reveal the beauty of everyday life in the Illawarra. Scheduled to launch in December 2023 at the Wollongong City Library, this exhibition promises to showcase the fleeting moments that often go unnoticed.

McLean, known for his documentary-style approach, has captured thousands of images throughout his career, but it is the candid moments that resonate most. “I’m more interested in the ‘fly on the wall’ style photography,” McLean stated. “I want to be a casual observer rather than an active participant.”

This collection, aptly titled ‘Daily Life,’ encapsulates the essence of the Illawarra region, showcasing its landscapes, streetscapes, and the vibrant lives of its people. With a focus on authenticity, McLean emphasizes that true photography is about capturing spontaneous moments, rather than contrived scenes.

Reflecting on his journey, McLean recalls being inspired by renowned photographers like Max Dupain, whose iconic 1937 image of a sunbaker at Culburra Beach left a lasting impression on him. “I loved the tone and highlights,” he shared, highlighting how such influences shaped his artistic vision.

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, McLean took to the streets, documenting the quirks and realities of daily life. One memorable shot features a sanitation worker wearing a Darth Vader mask, aimed at engaging the public on health protocols. “This is the beauty of photography,” he noted. “You capture moments in a fraction of a second, and they’re often gone before you even realize it.”

The upcoming exhibition marks a significant milestone for the Illawarra Mercury, celebrating its 170th anniversary. McLean’s work will play a crucial role in representing the region’s resilience and spirit during these unprecedented times.

As anticipation builds for the exhibition, the community is encouraged to reflect on the simple yet profound moments that define our lives. McLean’s photos not only tell stories but also serve as a reminder of the beauty found in everyday experiences.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting event and the powerful stories captured by Adam McLean. The exhibition will open to the public in December, inviting everyone to witness the fleeting beauty of daily life in the Illawarra.
