UPDATE: Jason Behrendorff has officially debuted for the Melbourne Renegades, igniting excitement ahead of a highly anticipated match against his former team, the Perth Scorchers, on January 7. The fast-bowling veteran, a key player in the Big Bash League (BBL) for over a decade, expressed his emotions about wearing red instead of the familiar orange.
Behrendorff, who has played 180 T20 games and captured 140 wickets for the Scorchers, revealed he felt “butterflies” stepping onto the field for his first game with the Renegades. “I was actually quite nervous for my first game for the Renegades,” he admitted in an interview with The West Australian. This shift marks a significant chapter in his career, as he transitions from a franchise where he won five titles to a new challenge in Melbourne.
The 35-year-old left-arm swing bowler signed a three-year contract with the Renegades, allowing him to relocate his family while maintaining career flexibility. Despite this stability, Behrendorff remains driven to prove himself as an elite talent in the league. “You’ve always got something to prove,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to high performance.
In his initial outings, Behrendorff has already made an impact, taking four wickets in three matches. His experience is expected to bolster the Renegades, especially with the addition of fellow former Scorcher Andrew Tye. Tye, who has the most wickets in Scorchers history with 161, joined the Renegades as a replacement player, bringing further depth to the squad.
As the Renegades prepare for a derby against the Melbourne Stars on January 4, Behrendorff is eagerly anticipating the clash against the Scorchers. “I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t circled it on the calendar,” he remarked, highlighting the significance of returning to Optus Stadium, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and large crowds.
“It’s going to be an exciting game come January 7, no doubt,” Behrendorff added, reflecting on his strong ties to Perth.
Behrendorff’s transition to the Renegades is not just about personal achievement; he aims to share his wealth of experience with younger players. “I can hopefully impart that on some of the younger guys within the group,” he stated, recognizing the importance of mentorship in a tight competition where every match counts.
As the BBL season progresses, Behrendorff noted the intense competition, with teams closely matched. “The competition is extremely tight, and that’s where things like net run rate seem to always come into play,” he explained. His insights suggest that this season’s finals race will be fiercely contested, with every match crucial to teams’ playoff aspirations.
Behrendorff’s dual role as a player and commentator has also garnered attention. His recent commentary stints with Channel 7 have allowed him to share his expertise with fans, a path he is considering pursuing full-time after his playing career concludes. “I love being involved in the commentary space,” he expressed, reinforcing his commitment to cricket.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming matches, Behrendorff’s journey with the Renegades is just beginning, and fans are eager to see how he will shape the season ahead.
