BREAKING: The Sunbury Jets have claimed a victory against the Warrandyte Venom, but their chances of making the finals in the Big V Women’s Championship are officially over. Despite needing to win their final four matches and rely on the Sherbrooke Suns losing all of theirs, the Jets’ hopes crumbled with the Suns defeating the Hume City Broncos earlier today.

Playing short-handed with only eight players, the Jets struggled initially, trailing 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. However, a dominant second quarter saw them surge ahead with a score of 25-14, bringing the halftime score to 37-26. The Suns’ victory over the Broncos later in the day confirmed the Jets’ fate, ending any lingering dreams of playoff contention.

In an exciting final quarter, the Jets erupted for 28 points, overpowering the Venom with a final score of 81-59. Leading the charge was Ally Stewart, who scored 20 points, supported by three teammates who also reached double figures.

With two rounds remaining, the Jets currently sit in sixth place with a record of 10 wins. They are set to face local rivals, the Hume City Broncos, on Saturday night before squaring off against the Bulleen Boomers on Sunday.

In parallel, the Jets men also secured a hard-fought victory, narrowly defeating the Camberwell Dragons 102-99. The match was intensely competitive, with the Jets maintaining a slight lead through each quarter. Although the Dragons won the final quarter, it was not enough to overcome the Jets. Byron Gladden was the standout performer, scoring 24 points. The Jets men are currently in ninth place with 7 wins out of 20 games, and will take on Melbourne University next Saturday.

As the Jets women look ahead to their final games, the atmosphere is charged with urgency and determination. Stay tuned for updates as they battle to finish the season strong, despite their playoff hopes being extinguished.
