UPDATE: A Jetstar passenger is sounding the alarm after a confusing ordeal during her recent return flight from Bali. Sky Kennedy, a young Australian traveler, faced potential denial of boarding due to an overbooking situation, sparking urgent concerns for travelers.

Sky’s alarming experience unfolded at the check-in desk, where she was informed that her seat was not guaranteed because she had not pre-booked one. “When I got to the desk, the lady mentioned that the plane was full and because I hadn’t selected a seat, that I didn’t actually have one secured on that flight,” she recounted to Yahoo News.

This confusion arose despite her having booked the flight months in advance. Sky expressed frustration, stating, “If I had known that choosing a seat meant my booking wasn’t secured, I would have, of course, selected one.” She pointed out that Jetstar’s booking process did not clearly communicate this critical information.

Jetstar’s seat selection costs range from $8 for basic options to as much as $32 for premium seats. Sky typically avoids selecting a seat as she is “happy to sit anywhere.” However, she now warns travelers to reconsider, saying, “Pay the extra however much it is for your seat and check in as soon as you can, don’t wait until you get to the airport.”

Jetstar confirmed to Yahoo News that customers are not required to pre-purchase seats to guarantee travel. However, they also acknowledged that in cases of overbooking, passengers may be reassigned to different flights. The airline’s policy includes compensation, reimbursement, and assistance for affected travelers.

Sky’s situation became even more complicated when she learned that the passengers next to her had reserved a seat for a friend who had been hospitalized with COVID-19. This highlights a broader issue within the airline industry: overbooking flights in anticipation that some passengers will not show up.

Jetstar stated that while overbooking may occur “on rare occasions,” they strive to accommodate all passengers. However, Sky’s ordeal serves as a cautionary tale for future travelers. She now emphasizes the importance of securing a seat selection at the time of booking to avoid unexpected complications.

The airline has since issued an apology to Sky for the distress caused by the incident. With travel returning to normalcy, it’s critical for passengers to stay informed and proactive about their bookings to ensure a smooth journey.

As travel resumes worldwide, travelers are advised to remain vigilant and consider all factors that could affect their flights.
