UPDATE: The U.S. Justice Department has confirmed that the “overwhelming majority” of documents related to the investigation of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein are already public, according to Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. This urgent disclosure comes as the Justice Department began sending materials to Congress on August 18, 2023, in compliance with a subpoena demanding all records by August 19.
Of the staggering 33,295 pages sent to Congress, Garcia revealed that only 3% contain new information. This means that approximately 97% of the documents are duplicates of previous releases from the Justice Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, or the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s office.
Among the contents released are critical files, including surveillance video from the night of Epstein’s death at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, Supreme Court filings from Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s long-time associate currently serving a 20-year federal prison sentence, and a Justice Department inspector general report on Epstein’s death.
Garcia emphasized the disappointment in the lack of new insights, stating, “There is no excuse for incomplete disclosures. Survivors and the American public deserve the truth.” The only new information provided consists of fewer than 1,000 pages from the Customs and Border Protection’s logs detailing flight locations of Epstein’s plane from 2000 to 2014.
In response to the Democratic concerns, a spokesperson for the Republican members of the committee declined to confirm the contents of the documents, noting that the panel is still reviewing them. The spokesperson indicated that this batch is just the beginning, with more documents expected soon.
Meanwhile, a Justice Department representative stated that the materials already provided exceed what the Democrats initially requested when they were in charge of the committee. The department will continue to supply Congress with information while maintaining protections for crime victims.
