BREAKING: The Keilor Basketball Association (KBA) has just been honored with two major awards from Basketball Victoria for 2025, including the coveted titles of ‘Referee Program of the Year (Large)’ and ‘Referee Association of the Year (Tier One)’. This recognition highlights KBA’s commitment to fostering a strong refereeing culture, showcasing their referees’ skill, and promoting participation in the sport.
In an enthusiastic response, KBA’s technical officials development officer, Kyra Jacobson, stated the association is thrilled with the achievement. “Everyone’s really positive about it. It’s nice to see other people recognize it from outside [the club] as well,” she said, emphasizing the significance of this recognition.
The awards evaluated the number of officials invited to national competitions, along with KBA’s representation at statewide events. Jacobson noted that KBA has made remarkable strides in high-level competitions while simultaneously focusing on grassroots development.
“Communication is key to being a good referee,” Jacobson explained. She added, “It’s all about effective communication and being able to explain and teach the rules, and making the game better itself.” She humorously remarked that a good referee is often not remembered at the end of a game, reinforcing the idea that their impact is felt rather than seen.
Jacobson also highlighted the evolution of refereeing as a career over the past five years, stating, “It’s a skill or a job that nobody really sees longevity in but it’s an absolute pathway for a lot of people.” She revealed that many young referees are now succeeding in their roles across the country, viewing officiating as a valuable pastime that equips them with life skills.
KBA’s recognition comes at a crucial time when sports organizations are increasingly focusing on the development of officiating standards and the importance of effective refereeing. As the association continues to thrive, the community eagerly anticipates further achievements and contributions to the sport.
This momentous occasion not only celebrates KBA’s past successes but also serves as a beacon for aspiring referees and basketball enthusiasts everywhere. The commitment to excellence in officiating is a testament to the association’s dedication to growing the sport at all levels.
Stay tuned for more updates as KBA continues to make waves in the basketball community.
