Eli and Hunter Sturman (10) are looking forward to becoming scientists for a day

URGENT UPDATE: Young visitors at the Perth Royal Show have a unique opportunity to transform into scientists from September 27 to October 4. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is hosting an interactive display that will take guests on a captivating journey from the paddock to the plate.

This year’s immersive trail invites children to don laboratory coats and glasses as they explore DPIRD’s groundbreaking science initiatives aimed at boosting Western Australia’s agriculture. Little scientists will peer through real microscopes to examine specially grown grass for sheep feed, gaining insights into the FEED365 initiative, which enables farmers to cultivate lush, healthy plants year-round for livestock.

But that’s not all. The trail also features engaging activities that explain how scientific advancements are enhancing soil quality for grain crops. Participants can enjoy a ‘lift the flap’ game, matching various grains to everyday foods, making learning both fun and informative.

At the apple station, children will engage their senses, drawing on sight, sound, and smell to evaluate fruit samples. This activity mirrors DPIRD’s sensory testing techniques used to develop new, delicious apple varieties.

Upon completing the trail, young scientists will receive a stamp and a memorable selfie in their lab attire.

“Science is integral to how we grow and supply our food,”

said Cec McConnell, deputy director general of primary industries development at DPIRD. She emphasizes the importance of the Paddock to Plate display in revealing the science behind the food we consume and the clothing we wear.

McConnell urges all Royal Show attendees, both young and old, to visit the DPIRD display for a closer look at the science that supports our farmers and helps deliver nutritious food from paddock to plate while safeguarding the environment.

The DPIRD’s Paddock to Plate display will be located in the Centenary Pavilion on the eastern side of the showgrounds, near Gate 10. This interactive experience is a must-see for families looking to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Don’t miss out on this exciting chance to spark curiosity and ignite a passion for science in the upcoming days at the Perth Royal Show!
