URGENT UPDATE: Kmart has just announced a recall of its “magic sand” products amid serious asbestos concerns, prompting immediate action from parents and teachers across the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Lab testing revealed potential traces of asbestos in the popular 14-piece Sand Castle Building Set and tubs of magic sand in blue, green, and pink.
Officials urge customers to stop using these products immediately. The recall affects items sold at Kmart and Target stores nationwide, as well as online and through their respective apps. Kmart’s statement emphasized, “The product is being recalled because the sand may include asbestos, which is a prohibited substance in Australia.”
Although Kmart confirmed that respirable asbestos was not detected in tested samples, they stressed the importance of safety, stating, “The risk that any asbestos found is likely to be airborne or fine enough for inhalation is low.” However, the presence of any asbestos raises alarms, especially for families with children.
In light of these findings, customers are instructed to dispose of the products safely. Kmart advises wearing disposable gloves and a mask while either returning the items or double-bagging them to keep out of reach of children. The retailer warned, “Do not dispose of the products in general waste.”
The situation has already led to significant disruptions, with more than a dozen ACT schools and preschools partially shutting down on Friday following an asbestos warning related to various children’s colored sand products. WorkSafe ACT assessed the risk of exposure to traces of chrysotile asbestos as low, yet the closures are a precautionary measure allowing for testing and remediation.
ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry is expected to provide updates on the status of these school closures on Sunday, as parents anxiously await news. The developments have sparked widespread concern across the region, impacting the everyday lives of families and educators alike.
